The JR occurrence is located in the head waters of South Chemainus Creek.

The area is within the Cowichan uplift, comprising Paleozoic Sicker Group sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Triassic diabase and gabbro sills and dikes (informally Mount Hall gabbro), coeval with Karmutsen Formation (Vancouver Group) volcanics, occur in the area. Granodiorite and quartz diorite of the Early to Middle Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite intrude the rocks in the area.

Mineralization occurs in shear zones in pyritized, and/or hematitic chert, and in pyritized and silicified sheared diorite. The chert outcrops on the southern portion of the claim and is part of the Mississippian to Pennsylvanian Fourth Lake Formation (Buttle Lake Group). The intrusives have been kaolinitized locally, the chert has been silicified, and limonite staining was noted.

In 1986, the area was staked as the J.R. claims by Ruza Resources. Rock sampling yielded values up to 3.5 per cent copper (Assessment Report 16452). In 1987, Sierra Madre completed a program of geochemical sampling and ground geophysical surveys. In 1989, Wellington-Young Resources completed a program soil sampling.
